That was cool, some interesting stuff indeed. I'm 24 now so I take it I'm early Generation Y? I still feel like I'm part of the "youth" but at the same time I feel like I'm half a part of it and half not. It wasn't until about high school that things like computers/games/internet was worth being interested in. My childhood just seems so different than the kids of today where they learn to use computers by age 5 and use the internet to educate themselves and whatnot. From age 6-16 in my time it was more about being outside as much as possible for as long as possible and thats how everyone was I knew. Nowa days, its just as common to be a computer wiz or gaming enthusiast through your childhood as it is to be interesting in sports etc. I guess it still comes down to the individuals interests but the kids of today were born into the "internet age" where as I was introduced late. I can't complain, I try not to but I almost feel bad when I see 12 year olds who just come home from school and game in their free time. It's just that having been a kid that skateboarded everyday and got in trouble and hurt himself and experienced all kinds of fucked up shit that I never would have if I was stuck at home playing a game. I see my cousin who's 13 now and he's a gaming hermit and when I think about all that I went through by that age compared to him it's almost unbelievable. By that age I had already tried weed and got a BJ and broken bones and been beat up by some random homeless guy(mostly because I threw a bottle at him lol) and shit who knows what else. I dunno, it's just crazy to see the difference being born 10 years apart can make.
I would have to agree. 10 years doesn't seem like that much times but with the advances of technology, social engineering and the ease and access of information, it can make a huge impact. My generation would be the mills. Currently 23 years of age I have experiences both the 90's and growing up in the early 00's. It seems that I am a bit more conservative than most in my age group and in my area. Most people my age seem to be going to college, going to partys and living life by the seat of their pants. I on the other hand am married with two kids and a ton of responsibilities. I remember growing up and going to school I was mostly active outdoors with friends but I did spend a good bit of mine time on the internet in AOL chat rooms, playing Sega and the NES as well. I also held my first job at the age of 13 at a 7-11 working at least 20 hours a week while going to school. I also had a big legal bout with a kid in my 8th grade class. It ended up with his missing 6 teeth and me having to pay for a lawyer, court cost and other things while working at 7-11. In high school I held two jobs and still went to school, granted my GPA wasn't the greatest. So at the point in time I didn't have as much free time as I wanted because of the things that I had to pay for and duties to fufill. Before that though I was always "Being a kid" and doing the usual stuff that kids have done around my area. Setting fire to the woods, getting into fights and basicly dealing with a shit area. Granted this may not seem normal for everyone else but that was normal to me. So all that said and done, I would have to agree with the video in some aspects of my life and my current generation.
I can relate to you, terand, even tho Im more then twice your age. I was working at the age of 12 pumping gas...at 15 cents a gallon. By age 13 I was working the station by myself ...at 14 I was managing the station and garage. I didnt get to party much and do everything the other kids did..but I had my first car at age 12..and 4 cars at age 14...none of the other kids had cars..so I was still popular with the girls. the station I worked at sold beer..I sold beer at 13...the owner mentioned how after I took over we sold a lot more beer and wine....no that I would sell it too my underage friends..nooooo not me. The hippy and flower child thing hit New Orleans later than it did out west. So I was 14..a kid really...working in a gas station on the interstate 10...lots of hippys traveled that road heading to New Orleans and on the florida. That was first experience that there was something else out there..another lifestyle. I saw it on TV but its not as real.... meeting real hippys in 1969 was like seeing space aliens landing, really cool aliens...with martian cigarettes. I grew my hair..tuned in...turned on.. great times ..Id not trade any away. I had a trs 80 color was my first pc.. I was maybe 40 before I got online in '95 I think it was..played all the orignal consoles as they came out. been an internet fan and game junky ever since doom and ultima
