  2. the floods in thailand..seen a few pictures of westerndigitals flooded. They warned of this when the storm was approaching.

  3. Just wait to buy a drive then. It sucks that they went up so much, but they will come back down eventually. hard drives were dirt cheap as it was, and they still arent THAT expensive. Maybe this will drive some people towards SSDs though :)

Can't need my parts in time for TOR. Going to be at least a couple months after they get the plants back up before the prices start to drop again.

  5. Looks like I bought my new drive at the right time.

  6. My drive of 2 years is still kickin'. Its sad about the floods though, not good for anyone.

  7. Found this on the internet about HDD makers:

    WD - made in Thailand
Seagate - made in Thailand (some 7200.1X in china, not sure about recent)
Samsung - South Korea and China, more in SK
Hitachi - China (Some in Thailand)

So in theory, Samsung shouldn't raise in price and Hitachi maybe only a little. However I have noticed Samsung drives went up $10 already. Probably just cause they want to make extra money on them even though the cost to make them didnt increase.

Yea, the profit margin was so thin to begin with I bet the manufacturer's not in Tailand will still jack up the prices a bit to get a larger profit for a time.

This might actually be a good thing for Western Digital. It must suck working at one of these companies and knowing that every day that goes by is one day closer to being out of a job. Solid state drives are the way of the future and will replace hard drives, even for mass storage. Sure its a ways off, but it will be within 10 years. And 10 years is not a long time in the grand scheme of things. Hard drives will probably still be a niche market to the server area that needs HUGE amounts of storage space for quite a long time, but that market cant sustain 4 major companies. With the onset of triple level cell NAND chips for mass storage SSDs and the shrinking of process nodes we will see 2 and 3TB drives within the next couple years. With prices coming down probably a year or two after that. This major flood might give western digital the excuse it needs to completely revamp its production sites and move into a new direction that will save the company.

Wow that Hitachi drive EniGmA pointed out to me in the other thread has almost tripled in price since he posted it. From 60 and change to 150+. Pretty much all other drives have done a similar price jump. They seem to go up a few bucks every day. It's almost to the point where SDDs are better price/performance.

  11. Well, considering a SSD is 10-1000x faster depending on the situation, they have always been better price/performance ;)
But ya they are getting closer to better price/size too with these huge price increases

I've always considered the size of a HD part of the performance.

Same. If I were to do a system rebuild at this stage I would still only use an SSD in conjunction with a conventional mechanical/magnetic hard drive. I wouldn't consider the SSD alone, since there's no way I can fit all the data I'd want to on it without paying ridiculous amounts for the disk space.
