Any opinions on this cpu I'm giving this some thought as a way to put a bit more in to my video card. if i get this instead of an Intel cpu and board, I could probably swing a $400 card maybe even squeeze a $500 card out or a small SSD.

There also seems to be some question about whether my gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 rev 1.1 will work with this cpu so if anybody knows anything about that let me know.

nvm seems this cpu will over heat something or other on my motherboard. I'll just go with an Intel build

Ya I would like that but the motherboards to properly support those cost a bit more then my budget can handle I was thinking more along the lines of

Maybe push for the none K version of that one you linked. What do you think of waiting for the new intel cpus to come out in Septemberish?
Chances are I won't get a cpu/mobo until after that anyway, I'm trying to work something out with somebody at the moment if it works out I won't wait that long but I might end up having to wait into spring next year for the cpu/mobo, if it doesn't work out.

That motherboard you linked will run the i5 4690K perfectly fine with no issues. Any z97 board will work fine and even most z87 boards will work with the CPU ok, you just get more features with Z97 and I *think* Broadwell compatibility (not that that matters)

Skylake processors will be better of course, as they will have newer instruction sets and a little bit better IPC. Rumor is about 5%. But rumor is the cost is going up quite a bit, not sure if that is true or not. Either way, compared to Haswell it shouldnt matter a ton if the cost is out of your price range. But if you ware waiting to buy till then anyway then go for the new stuff, if you want to buy now then go for what is currently out.

Oh in the reviews for on Newegg (i think it was) somebody said the board wasn't any good for overclocking the k versions which is kind of the point for k version premium price.

It isn't the best that's for sure, but it will do well enough. You can get to the mid 4GHz range on a 4 phase board with those Haswells. The issue is pulling amperage into the processor and a beefy 4 phase like that board has should be able to provide a fully stable 24/7 125w through it or more with no issues (And the i5 4690K is a 77w stock TDP, overclocked it will be 125w or less). I'm pretty sure those are 40A MOSFETs because they are the same that the top end Z97X Fatality board uses, only half as many on this cheaper board. VRMs are on-die for Haswell so the main part is just being able to provide enough power through the motherboard, which this looks capable of doing. Devil's Canyon processors are overclocking optimized on their VRM section so they will do fine. The primary issue is always cooling the processor.
