I liked the other video I saw of their stuff better.
The first one is a little too .. static .. to be impress, in the sense that there's no dynamic lighting and it seems like most of their shadows could be done by clever texturing.
That being said, it's quite impressive and I like where it's going.

tech demos are tech demos no games ever look like the tech demos.

But tech demos show (often new) technology that might be used to make games more realistic, or prettier, or both.

  5. True, but both those videos are pretty sucky in the graphics department compared to other next gen engine tech demos I have seen already. it is true though that no current game is run on a next gen engine, which is obvious because it takes longer than 6 months to make a whole new engine optimized for new hardware. With every generation we never see truly next gen stuff for more than a year past the console launch.

It's showing off a way to get more realistic 3D environments, easier. I believe it's by 3D scanning real life rooms and items by laser and photography, recreating them easily in a 3D model/world.
It's not meant to be a complete game engine, like CryEngine or Frostbite or any of the other upcoming ones, but a technology to make game worlds and objects.

That said, no doubt there are more impressive game engines and graphical technologies out there, both released and being worked on, but we have to learn to appreciate any little step toward innovation and improvement, or we'll discourage the people working on these things. :>

  7. oh I get what you mean. Ya that is pretty cool I guess. If someone wants to re-create a scene exactly then it would be the perfect tool.

  8. Laser scanning is already enabled in many(/most) engines. It is expensive which is why it is often limited to facial reconstruction and other things of small detail.

I don't know enough about enough specific game engines, and the technology behind them, to comment on that.
I've only barely dabbled in Unity, and a little bit in Source.
