Oh of course. In fact, the morning after drinking can lend itself to situations where it is nearly imperative to use such language, such as: "what was I fucking thinking last night?" "What was that shit I drank?" or... "Who the fuck is that girl in my bed?"
I've always seen swearing as just a different way to express ones self. I swear all the time, and don't care if others do as well. They're fucking words. Get over it
For the OP, yes, it would appear that games are adding profanity just like movies are starting to gratuitously kill dogs and put children in harm's way. In both cases, it's supposed to add gritty "street cred" or "intensity" but my personal view is that both are going to quickly become cliche's and overused. They are indeed just words and images, but they hold no mystery nor interest for me in and of themselves. Might they add flavor? Maybe, but only when used by a chef. Most of the time, they're meaningless fluff peppered into sentences for emphasis. While that may offend my linguistic sensibilities, I'd never presume we must ensure the purity of the English language. My favorite curses are Sicilian and Egyptian proverbs. My favorite exclamations are non-sensical; e.g., "rock salt and ice cream!" or "Great Googly-Moogly!" Your mileage may vary.
When I scream "WHAT THE FUCCCCK IS WRONNNNNNG WITH YOUUAEWRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH" there is nothing weak or unsure about it. I'm very certain that in that moment I want to make a smoothie of your special parts and feed it to the neighbour's dog. In all seriousness, I think that there are many ways to swear. There's the type that's indicitave of an idiot, swearing that is circumstantial (i.e. falling through a floor..), regular use by habit, or to add otherwise inexplicable emphasis to something. As for games, I'm not sure how vulgar they all get. I've had exposure to few computer or console games. I think GTA4 is over-the-top completely unneecssary, but less harmful and sometimes amusing for the adult crowd. The problem is that it's difficult to regulate who actually is an audience to these types of games. In AoC you can see damn near full-on nudity (boobies!!), and it doesn't bother me, but I also see no need for it. My character needs armor to survive, so I won't spend too much time without it. Even if I could run around the game naked without consequence, female characters could easily come with bras, I mean, they wear panties, but no bras?! In conclusion, I think there is a beneficial level to vulgarity but it is not near the limit which game developers seem to think it is.
I think the strong language = weak mind depends one how often and in what situations someone uses it in If you hurt yourself in someway everyday then its fine to swear but if you're just throwing it in a sentence to be more cool then your an idiot
I use it for three reasons: Humor, Emphasis, and to prove a point. Pain comes later. (or fits in with emphasis). Do those work?
Nope, I do it too. I use it in everyday conversation all the time, and my vocabulary is quite palatable. I don't really use it much online, but you can notice a lot of it in my writing.
I have been known to curse..when mad and drunk...or hurt.. Everyone has a bad day. I dont curse when mad...but mad and drunk?..I still feel the shame of it. Einstien agreed Strong language = weak mind..its where I got the phrase. Einstien was known to curse at times. No one always has control over their mind. Just because you know and use a few choice words don't make you a fool with a weak mind...your just weak when you lose control. We all lose control..at what point is the measure of yourself...also to what extent you lose control..how quickly you recompose your self. Your I.Q. does not help at that time. Using a few choice words to emphasize a point is partly just the community your in...that is not a sign of a low I.Q....just a lack in vocabulary. Those that try to express feelings..and all that comes out is a string of curse words..that is the weak mind of which I speak.
nah it's not like I hate people that swear. I just think for the most part is highly over used and very much unnecessary in many topics/conversations. swearing in terms of its usefulness is very much like, smoking for example IMHO. but do I hate people that smoke? of course not.
Who died and made Einstein boss? A lot of "inappropriate" words have evolved from something somewhat or entirely different in meaning. And at what point did people start declaring certain words taboo and weak? As people we have "decided" that these words are bad, so guess what! I'm undeciding it. For some it probably does indicate a lack of exposure to education, literature, etc., but for the most part, it is just as much a part of our vocabulary as another word. "Fuck you" or "curse you" kinda mean the same thing - why is one the weaker alternative? Because Einstein said so?
Eep, this has turned out to be a 'shits' and giggles thread. Only reason that I said this was Bad Company had 'Strong' Language attached to it and so many other games were like it too (using that 'label'). Anyways, you've maybe heard me on vent. My old man is/was a carpenter, swears more than a sailor and I kinda picked it up from him. He now makes furniture. You should hear him swear when a machine has a fit. Swears very colourfully. So in part I picked it up from him
